michaelmas – 29 september 2018
“In autumn Saint Michael with sword and with shieldPasses over meadow and orchard and field. He’s on the path to battle ‘gainst darkness and strife-He is the heavenly warrior, protector of life. The harvest let us gather with Michael’s aid;The light he sheddeth fails not nor does it fade,And when the corn is cut and the meadows are bareWe’ll don Saint Michael’s armour and onward we’ll fare.”
The Autumnal equinox is upon us and the nights are now longer than the days and it is time to celebrate Michaelmas and all the magical warm colours and harvest of the ground that the long hot summer has given us. Michaelmas is celebrated as an important festival in Waldorf schools by singing songs of St Michael, games and wonderful plays. All the children wear warm oranges and reds and bring in harvest fruits and vegetables in these colours to make soups and press juices to share.
St Michael’s legend symbolises the autumnal resurgence of human strength, inner light and willpower to overcome our inner dragons which may have crept over us during summer’s dreamy warmth where we lost ourselves to the shining light of the world. Now our shining light grows daily within us as the outward light of the approaching winter darkens. It is now that our human will-forces are most strongly needed, we must now stand up, oppose the dragons which would pull us back down, and wield our light-filled, clear consciousness as we go forth into the darkness of winter!
michaelmas season table
Celebrating all the colours of Michaelmas and the harvest time we created this season table to display all our autumnal treasures and St Michael and the dragon!
The absolutely beautiful autumn muslin cloth set transforms the backdrop to any season table or play area with an ethereal quality as the light shines through the 5 soft colours perfectly matched to the season. Their magical quality is also shown in the picture at the top with the Ostheimer dragon and St Michael the Ostheimer knight on his horse.
jute mini bowl set
This set of 3 hand crafted natural jute nesting bowls is just perfect for holding your autumn treasures on the season table or for storing little toys or other items. We collected some conkers, crab apples and apples all blown down by the windy weather! The bowls are also available in other colours.
decorated beeswax candle
We decorated this beautiful 100% beeswax pillar candle with some colourful autumn leaves by sticking them on with sticky wax. You could also warm and soften some bits of old beeswax to make little sticky blobs to help stick the leaves on. Perfect to light on the dinner table this time of year or on the season table to symbolise the inner light we take forward into the darkness of winter.
