the magic of advent
With the nights drawing in and the air getting colder, the time of Advent is so magical, full of festive promise and can bring warmth and light to winter days…
“In the deep and dark wood’s heart
Where moans the North Wind cold,
You will find a sun-filled cave
When you walk a spiral road.
Shimmering stars will sing above
To the crystals that glitter below,
While you draw your light from a flame so bright
Bringing warmth to the sparkling snow.”
‘Adventsong’ by Eugene Schwartz, The Waldorf Book of Poetry
Our take on this tradition is a string of little presents that arrive at the door brought by a tiny
forest gnome… a little tissue wrapped surprise to be opened each day of advent until Christmas!
All together the little gifts make a magical, wintry, gnome scene…and the sheer anticipation of what each day will bring is simply joyful! We made the below adorable things into 24 little tissue wrapped parcels then using wool hung each one from a piece of string. Each alternate day had a single precious gemstone wrapped up from the gemstone purse, the other contents are as follows: forest gnome Ilex; forest gnome Corylus; branch wood table; branch wood bench; matchstick garden herbs; spinning top; mini felt friends squirrel; doll’s dust pan and brush; doll’s kitchen accessories and grimm’s gnome bakery.
Grimm’s beautiful 8 piece, 24 hole alder wood advent spiral. The perfect way to celebrate the approach of Christmas! Add a red beeswax candle or decoration each day in the countdown to Christmas, or move a single candle inwards each day. The Ostheimer Mary on her donkey could also travel alongside until, when the centre is reached, Christmas arrives! To safely add candles you will need brass candle holders.
A stunning collection of traditional advent calendars each with 24 windows hiding a secret little picture behind each window for each day. Beautiful artwork and in a sweet A5 size – perfect for posting and for little hands!
